PICTURE THIS
Book & Lyrics by Richard Edelman
Music by Miranda Ferriss Jones

PICTURE THIS follows the careers of 19th century sculptors Edmonia Lewis, first Black and Native American sculptor to achieve national and international prominence, and Emma Stebbins, first woman to receive a public art commission from New York City. Edmonia discovers her skill for sculpture at Oberlin College, though oppressive people and institutions cause her to leave and pursue art her own way. Meanwhile, Emma attempts to escape the repression and privilege of Manhattan’s upper classes to express her sexuality and art authentically. These pursuits bring both women to Rome, where they join a vibrant and tumultuous community of female artists.
