Edmonia
Edmonia follows the lives and loves of 19th sculpturesses Edmonia Lewis and Emma Stebbins as they carve an artistic space in a world not built for them.
Edmonia Lewis was the first Black and Native American sculptor to achieve national and international prominence. Emma Stebbins was the first woman to receive a public art commission from New York City. Edmonia discovers her skill for sculpture at Oberlin College, though oppressive people and institutions cause her to leave and pursue art her own way. Meanwhile, Emma attempts to escape the repression and privilege of Manhattan’s upper classes to express her sexuality and art authentically. These pursuits bring both women to Rome, where they join a vibrant and tumultuous community of female artists.
Edmonia tells the incredible story of these trailblazing women, incorporating modern day themes into their fascinating historical journey.
